Origin: Phoenician mythology

Other names: Behelit, Berith, Beal, Berithi, Bofry, Bolfri

Beherit is a demon—a Great Duke of Hell at that—commanding 26 legions of lesser demons. He’s said to appear like a soldier wearing a gold crown atop a red horse, and some accounts say his skin is red as well. He will answer questions about the past, present, and future truthfully and can turn metals into gold.

To summon him, a magician must be wearing a silver ring to divert the noxious fumes coming from his mouth. If you offer an enticing reward, he will grant you success and riches; whatever your heart desires. He can also bolster one’s public speaking or singing.

There is a method for summoning him* in “Le tresor d’Albert Petit” (The Petit Albert): Bleed a black chicken at a crossroads and say, “Berith will do all my work for twenty years and I shall recompense him.”

*I will not be held responsible for what happens if you try this at home.
